Minions #313 - That Sinking Feeling!

Click Cartoon for Major Moping

Greetings, Sink Traps and Plumber's Nightmares!

Due to extenuating circumstances here at the Lair, we're running late this week, so I'm going to keep this short.  But I'd like to dedicate this cartoon to everybody out there that could use a little cheering up.  You know who you are!

Baring more unforeseen emergencies, we'll be back here next week!  See you then!

Minions #312 - Meet Doctor Wallstreet

Click Cartoon for Bigger Bailout!

Greetings, Fertilizer Spreaders and Tissue Matches!

A funny thing happened along the way to this week's cartoon...

We've never gone out of our way to be topical here at Minions at Work, though we've occasionally strayed across the line when there was a joke or a topic I just couldn't resist (as in last week's cartoon).  But in general, we've always steered clear of anything too controversial.

But last week I was looking through some of our stats to see which cartoons had the most page views, and to my surprise, pretty much all of the most popular ones had some topical element to them.  Which means my new philosophy here is that while I'm not going to seek out controversy simply for shock value, I'm not going to be quite as gun-shy about doing that kind of material if it suggests itself.

Now, don't expect "Minions at Work" to turn into "Doonesbury."  My preference is still for irreverent and absurdest humor and for pop-culture references rather than political ones.  But you may see a few more topical cartoons now and then, especially as we head into the election (which has already reached off-the-chart levels of insanity).  And know that as always, we will always lampoon real-life's lesser-evils where ever we see them.

It was in this spirit that I was inspired to throw together a new Overlord this week, "Doctor Wallstreet."  Really, in retrospect, I should have had a character to dig into Wall Street and corporate greed a long time ago.  I have a family member who used to work in the legal department of a brokerage firm, and then quit in large part because they couldn't stomach the ethics of what was going on there.  This was a long time before the economic collapse or the bail-outs started, so this has been on my radar for a quite a while.

Normally, when I make a new character, they sit around the studio here for a while as I figure out who and what they are before featuring them in a cartoon.  But this time I felt I was already so late to the party, Doctor Wallstreet got shoved out there pretty much as soon as I'd put him together.

So I don't really know what his back-story is yet.  All we know is, he's hideously scarred, wears a power suit with black gloves, and carries an aluminum brief-case.  At the moment, he's also wearing a riot-gear helmet and an assortment of tear-gas grenades, but his accessories may change as time goes by and those cease to be relevant.

I don't know how much we'll see of him.  Some villains like Doctor Coldblood, Doctor Funkystein, and Doctor Head-in-a-Jar show up all the time.  Others, like Cap'n Rehab, show up regularly but less often.  And others like Doctor Santa show up only a few times a year, or only as supporting characters or in Legion of Dread group shots.  Only the future will tell.  And past performance is no guarantee of future results! There.  The Legal Department told me I had to put that in.

See you guys back here next week!

Greetings, Hoard of Ignored!

Yes, I totally blew-off posting Minions last week.  So shoot me.  I've haven't done that too often in the years I've been doing this comic, so I feel like I had a freebie coming.  Besides, to make up for it, I posted an inventory-clearing TRIPLE FEATURE this week, based on the always-popular theme of "heads."

Actually, it was just the cartoon I intended to post last week, and a couple of dusty toons that have been at the bottom of the inventory forever.  Don't tell.  Heck, for all I know, these are the three funniest Minions at Work cartoons ever!  (But probably not.)

Anyway, it's been a week of it here.  Lots of behind-the-scenes stuff happening here at the Lair, some of it good, some of it Not Good.  Nothing I'm going to go into here.  Just distractions.  Also, shaking fist at one-eyed-yellow-Tylenol-Minions-Come-Lately!  Take that, you and your bazillions of dollars!

I'm also doing a lot of soul-searching about doing a major Site remodel, dumping our current Blogger Platform, and going to Wordpress with a nifty-looking web-comic-designed theme called CartoonPress.  Take a look here to see what I'm talking about.  It would look much more professional and be much easier to navigate (especially when looking through the archives).

On the down side, I've have to migrate 200+ old cartoons and a lot of other content over, do a lot of set-up and design work, and it would add monthly hosting fees (plus the suggested donation for the theme, which I'd feel-honor bound to pay).  I'd also have the issue about what to do with the old site.  Leave it up on blogger? Try and buy a new domain for the new site?  And since a lot of our traffic comes in from TVTropes.org where they have tons of direct links to cartoons.  All of these would be broken if I put the new site at www.MinionsAtWork.com.

So I'll probably do it, but how and when remain to be seen.  If you think it's a good idea, let me know.  You can also help keep the lights (and pay our hosting fees) by making a small contribution using the button below, shopping on Amazon using our links, or buying swag from one of our stores (and thanks to those of you already doing that).  One thing I'd REALLY like to tone down would be to eliminate the weekly pan-handling here and replace them with some discrete buttons, banners, and menu options.  So the move would all-around be good for you guys.

Let me know what you think.

We're off to California via Reno this week, but don't worry, I've got enough Minions at Work lined up to last until we get back.  Our posting and reminders, however, may be off schedule depending on where we are, how busy we are, and our access to wi-fi.

Greetings, Stuffed Shirts!

Is that rumble in your stomach the swine flu you caught waiting in the "Black Friday" line outside Best Buy, or that last dressing-sandwich that just didn't quite smell right? We don't care, because we're evil!

Yes, it's that interminable wait between major holidays, the twilight zone of celebration, the void of despair between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Oh, sure, not all of you out there in the big, wide, diverse world that we live in, celebrate both (or either) of these holidays, or at least, don't celebrate them at the same time, but you can suffer along with the majority of us U.S. Americans, by playing along with our home game. Just stuff yourself to bursting with mashed potatoes and stand in line at Target (or local equivalent) for a month, and you'll get the gist of it.

To make things easier for you, here's our handy "Minions at Work" gift guide. Remember, when you purchase through our guide, you help keep the evil coming here at "Minions at Work!"

First of all, who couldn't use an "Evil is not my Natuture, Evil is Just my Day Job" tee-shirt, sweatshirt, hat, mug, mousepad, or other "Minions at Work" item to enliven their person, workplace, or unemployment line!  We've got teddy bears, calendars, clocks, and all sorts of insane stuff. You'll find all these, and more, at our "Minions at Work" Cafe Press store. Shop HERE!

If you need a more personal gift, or if you need party-wear for new year's eve, may we recommend our exclusive "I've Got Evil in my Pants" clothing and accessory line over at "Number Two's House of Naughty."

Is the writer on your list having agent trouble?  Trouble finding an agent?  Do they have an agent?  (Then they've probably got trouble?)  Help them put things in perspective, and show the agents of the world who's in charge, with a shirt, mug, or other item featuring the world's worst literary agent, Sydney T. Cat!  Yes, anybody can call themselves a literary agent, even a cat!  And if it isn't prohibited, it's required!

Each item feature's "Bad Agent Sydney's" business card with her likeness, and the slogan "Bad Agent!  No Catnip!"  Funny and tons of fun!  Find the Bad Agent line HERE.

You can also support Minions at Work by buying one of the many books written by or featuring work by your Minion Master J. Steven York, and Mrs. Minion Master Christina F. York (who also writes mystery under the name Christy Evans)!  We've made it easy for you by setting up our own Amazon Store featuring our work.  Find it HERE.

And if nothing else strikes your fancy, we've also set up another Amazon Store featuring a variety of Minion-recommended minion and overlord themed products, including DVDs, books, and more!  Find it HERE.

See!  That should take care of your entire list for you!  And all the proceeds go to US!  We're EVIL, darn it!

See you next week.

Greetings, Toxic Wastes!

Yes, I'm late this week. I was hoping for some inspiration to do a new shoot, but nothing was coming to me this week, and I'm distracted by a lot of other projects at the moment. So it was into the old inventory for some material I wasn't feeling especially enthusiastic about.

I know from experience that this means nothing. Sometimes the ones I hate really suck, but sometimes they're the ones you guys love the most. So we'll throw this against the wall and see what sticks.

First of all, do you or anyone you know own an Amazon Kindle (or other ebook reader?). We're building a e-reader mailing list for the upcoming launch of my wife's plumber-mystery series (the first book, "Sink Trap" will be out in October) and to promote this, she's giving away FREE, hand-knitted "Kindle Kozies." If you sign on early, the odds of winning are almost absurdly good, and you'll be eligible for future drawings as well. Pictures and sign-up info HERE. Tell your friends!

On more familiar matters, one of the distractions here is work on the "Minions at Work Ah-HA! Card Game." I was hoping to have a test version of this done by the gaming convention I'm going to Labor Day weekend, but that seems unlikely at this point. Just too darned much work designing all these cards. Here are some samples of what we have so far:

The first image is the card back. The others are various card fronts.

Pizza is a VERY important card in this game. It's almost the most powerful card in the deck, but even it must tremble before the power of -- PENGUIN!

Anyway, we'll get it done one of these days, and I think it will be a lot of fun. Eventually you'll be able to order your own copy, so stay tuned.

So, it's back to the old lair for me. Hopefully I'll have some new material shot by next week. See you then.

Greetings, Fans on a Stick!

Well, I've run a bit late the last couple weeks (usually only a few hours, but...) and last week I completely forgot the reminder-list email until Thursday. Bad Minion Master! Bad! Anyway, I'm trying to get out a bit early this week.

But a lot has been going on here. Hope to have some major mad-science related news to announce next week, but I hate to jump the gun until the deal is closed on publishing things.

I'm also doing some major re-arranging here at Hangar 18 (AKA Minions Studios) that I'm hoping will give me more room for my photo setups, and allow me to better organize and store all my Minions props and set pieces. We'll see how that works out. I get bored seeing variations on the same sets and setups every week, and I'm sure you do too. Hopefully this will let me shake things up a bit.

Anyway, keep those cards and letters (well, comments) coming!

Greetings, Binoculars!

Just because I felt like it this week, two cartoons instead of one. Are they twice as funny? Uh-- Did I mention there were two?

Actually, only you can judge how funny they are. Some I've though were hysterical created barely a ripple with you guys, and some I've wondered if I should post at all turned out to be the most popular ever. Who knows?

But occasionally I compensate for uncertainty with quantity. I'm not saying this is one of those times. But it does happen.

On other matters, Minion Number One isn't here this week because he's moping by the mailbox. Seems you folks haven't sent in as many emails with questions for him as he'd like to see. Surely there must be something you've wondered about Minion life, about your favorite overlord, or just about life in general that might benefit from that unique Minion perspective. Drop him a note care of my address right now! His favorites will be answered in future video segments.

See you next week,

-Steve

A belated message from your Minion Master

Greetings, Minimals!

You know, those big, round, numbers are absolutely what kill web comics. I've seen this happen before. The comic creator has in mind to do something really SPECIAL for their 100 (or 200th, or 500th) installment, and they bite off more than they can chew, and then its late, and then the pressure is on, and it's later, and it gets worse, and finally they lose all momentum and give up.

Well, that will never happen here!

Okay, maybe it will. But we WILL NOT be giving up. Minions at Work #100 IS a major undertaking, and I'm still working on it, but we WILL get it done and we WILL get back to your regular old entertainment. Trust me. It will be worth the wait (and will set up a totally new Minions scenario which will provide countless new comic panels as time goes on).

Anyway, we'll be back next week with #100. Or if not, with something. See you then.

-Steve

*Actually, we're just going to send Minion Number Two and he's just going to bruise the little tyke's face with his gas-mask. This, however, is still better than being kissed by the candidate.)

A New Years message from your Minion Master

Greetings, Leap-years!

Okay, it's been a big week here, what with the unannounced invasion by our Son and his family, so we're running late, and this may not be our "A" material. LIVE WITH IT! Back to normal next year.

Have a safe and happy New Year.

An experimental jolt from the Minion Master:

Greetings, Subjects of my On-Going Experiment,

First, here are the results of our latest poll over on the Weekly Reminder List web-site. Didn't get to vote? Join today! I'm posting a new fun poll in the next day or two...

POLL QUESTION: If you were an evil Overlord, which evil plan would you put into motion?

CHOICES AND RESULTS

- Release flesh-eating zombies to promote a healthy vegan lifestyle. - 3.57%
- Crash Moon into Earth, use new real-estate to build housing developments and big-box stores. - 7.14%
- Plan? I got this smokin' lair. I got beer. Par-tay! - 14.29%

- Speed up global warming, and eliminate Florida as a factor in the next election. - 17.86%

And the winner!

- Bring back dinosaurs, and save money on gas by riding T-Rex to work. - 25.00%

Thanks for participating.

One more bit of fun: If you haven't already, check the previous post for a link to a fun video. It's not mine, but it IS Minionmobile related.

Since then, I've found another video to share, and this one earns the guy who made it, Vernon Barry, our...

EVIL GENIUS OF THE WEEK AWARD

Vernon has put an actual turbine engine into a golf cart and made it work! Even better, he got all the parts off Ebay for a song. Vernon, once you have your plan for world domination worked out and your lair all set up, give us a call. Here's the video.

That's all for this week. See you next time...
